The all clear was given in San Leandro late Thursday morning after reports of a possible gas leak forced the evacuation of two schools.
At around 11 a.m., someone reported smelling gas near John Muir Middle School and Woodrow Wilson Elementary.
Both schools are on Williams Street. School officials moved all students and staff to a nearby field.
Alameda County firefighters and PG&E crews arrived to investigate, but within the hour, students were allowed back inside the school.
PG&E said their crews were still at the scene investigating the incident.

The Sonoma County coroner's office is close to releasing the name of a woman who was found dead Wednesday afternoon in a field in Sonoma.
Coroner's Sgt. Greg Stashyn said the body is believed to be that of a missing woman whose next of kin have not yet been contacted.
Her name might be released Thursday afternoon, Stashyn said.
Sonoma police were dispatched to an open field near Fourth Street West and West MacArthur Street on reports of a body found by a resident who was walking in the area, sheriff's officials said.
Sheriff's investigators believe the body had been in the field for about a week, and said it was hidden by tall grass.
Foul play is not suspected, but sheriff's deputies were called in to investigate the death because of the condition of the body, according to the sheriff's office.

Mitt Romney assailed President Barack Obama's green energy record while standing outside the shuttered offices of a solar energy company that went bankrupt after receiving government loans.
Romney says a $535 million loan to Solyndra represented a conflict of interest because it benefited some of Obama's campaign contributors. He says the loan also discouraged others from starting similar companies.
Meanwhile, in Boston, Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said at a news conference that Romney ushered in slow job growth, higher debt and more fees as governor of Massachusetts.
Axelrod was heckled by Romney supporters, who chanted, "Solyndra, Solyndra."
Romney defended his gubernatorial record, saying the state's unemployment rate dropped during his tenure.
